Criminal Investigation

Overview
The criminal investigative division (CID) of the police department is responsible for conducting investigations into various types of crimes. Their role is to gather evidence, interview witnesses, analyze facts, and ultimately solve criminal cases.

Division composition
The division hierarchy includes a captain, lieutenant, one sergeant, a corporal, seven detectives, one civilian investigator, and one administrative assistant.

Training
Detectives are typically trained through a combination of education, on-the-job training, and specialized courses.

  1. Education: most detectives start their career as police officers. They undergo basic training at a police academy, which includes learning about laws, police procedures, firearms training, and physical fitness. This education provides a foundation for their future training as detectives.
  2. Field experience: after completing police academy training, officers work in patrol to gain practical experience. This helps them develop skills such as communication, observation, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  3. Specialized Training: once an officer is selected to become a detective, they receive specialized training specific to investigative work. This training covers a wide range of topics, including crime scene investigation, evidence collection and preservation, interview and interrogation techniques, surveillance methods, and using forensic tools and technology.
  4. Mentorship: New detectives often work alongside experienced investigators to learn from their expertise. They may be mentored by senior detectives who help them apply their knowledge in actual cases, provide guidance, and share insights gained from their experience.
  5. Continuing Education: Detectives are encouraged to participate in ongoing training throughout their career to stay updated on new techniques, technologies, and legal requirements. They attend seminars, workshops, conferences, and specialized courses to improve their skills and stay informed about advancements in the field of law enforcement.

Domestic violence investigation
The DeSoto Police Department responds to domestic violence incidents and handles the investigation of family (domestic) violence reports. If you are in immediate danger, please dial 911, or if you need counseling or other assistance please contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.SAFE (7233) or view their webpage at Domestic Violence Support | National Domestic Violence Hotline (thehotline.org).

Specialization
Though all CID personnel are trained in general investigation, some specialize in certain types of cases: fraud, property crimes, crimes against persons, juvenile, narcotics and gangs intelligence, and evidence preservation.
This specialization is necessary because of the increasingly complicated laws enforced by police, and also enhances productivity by ensuring a more complete and comprehensive case investigation.
